Elizabeth A. Curran /// Bookbinding and Repair
18th Century Style binding (tooling detail)
2014
calf
6 x 4"
This is a binding style found in the British Isles in the 18th century, sewn on raised cords and covered in dye-sprinkled calfskin. The Cambridge panel tooling designs are made with rolls, and not always perfect because this was a trade style binding-- meant to go quickly and not be fussed over too much. The edges are stained vermillion, and traditional endbands are sewn in green and yellow silk thread. The endsheets are hand marbled "common curls".
